A ferrugem da teca no Estado do Amazonas. Infoteca-e
GASPAROTTO, L.; PEREIRA, J. C. R..

A fish-based index of estuarine ecological quality incorporating information from both scientific fish survey and experts knowledge ArchiMer
Tableau, Adrien; Drouineau, Hilaire; Delpech, C.; Pierre, M.; Lobry, J.; Le Pape, O.; Breine, J.; Lepage, Mario.
In the Water Framework Directive (European Union) context, a multimetric fish based index is required to assess the ecological status of French estuarine water bodies. A first indicator called ELFI was developed, however similarly to most indicators, the method to combine the core metrics was rather subjective and this indicator does not provide uncertainty assessment. Recently, a Bayesian method to build indicators was developed and appeared relevant to select metrics sensitive to global anthropogenic pressure, to combine them objectively in an index and to provide a measure of uncertainty around the diagnostic. Moreover, the Bayesian framework is especially well adapted to integrate knowledge and information not included in surveys data. In this context,...

A fisheries acoustic multi-frequency indicator to inform on large scale spatial patterns of aquatic pelagic ecosystems ArchiMer
Trenkel, Verena; Berger, Laurent.
Fisheries acoustic instruments provide information on four major groups in aquatic ecosystems: fish with and without swim bladder (tertiary and quaternary consumers), fluidlike zooplankton (secondary consumers) and small gas bearing organisms such as larval fish and phytoplankton (predominantly primary producers). We entertain that this information is useable to describe the spatial structure of organism groups in pelagic ecosystems. The proposal we make is based on a multi-frequency indicator that synthesises in a single metric the shape of the acoustic frequency response of different organism groups, i.e. the dependence of received acoustic backscattered energy on emitting echosounder frequency. We demonstrate the development and interpretation of the...

A Framework for Resilience-based Governance of Social-Ecological Systems Ecology and Society
Garmestani, Ahjond S; Environmental Protection Agency, USA; garmestani.ahjond@epa.gov; Benson, Melinda Harm; University of New Mexico, USA; mhbenson@unm.edu.
Panarchy provides a heuristic to characterize the cross-scale dynamics of social-ecological systems and a framework for how governance institutions should behave to be compatible with the ecosystems they manage. Managing for resilience will likely require reform of law to account for the dynamics of social-ecological systems and achieve a substantive mandate that accommodates the need for adaptation. In this paper, we suggest expansive legal reform by identifying the principles of reflexive law as a possible mechanism for achieving a shift to resilience-based governance and leveraging cross-scale dynamics to provide resilience-based responses to increasingly challenging environmental conditions.

A fully validated microbiological assay to evaluate the potency of ceftriaxone sodium BJPS
Manfio,Maria Luisa; Agarrayua,Danielle Araújo; Machado,Jaison Carlosso; Schmidt,Cleber Alberto.
Ceftriaxone (CFTX) sodium is a third-generation, broad-spectrum cephalosporin that is resistant to beta-lactamases. An alternative bioassay for the assessment of the potency of this drug in pharmaceutical formulations has not been previously reported. Thus, this paper reports the development and full validation of a 3 x 3 agar diffusion bioassay using a cylinder-plate method to quantify CFTX sodium in pharmaceutical samples. The strain Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 6538P was used as the test microorganism, and the results of the proposed bioassay displayed high linearity, precision, accuracy, specificity and robustness. All potency results were statistically analyzed using an analysis of variance (ANOVA) and were found to be linear (r=0.99999) in the range of...

A global wave parameter database for geophysical applications. Part 2: Model validation with improved source term parameterization ArchiMer
Rascle, Nicolas; Ardhuin, Fabrice.
A multi-scale global hindcast of ocean waves is presented that covers the years 1994-2012, based on recently published parameterizations for wind sea and swell dissipation [Ardhuin, F., Rogers, E., Babanin, A., Filipot, J.-F., Magne, R., Roland, A., van der Westhuysen, A., Queffeulou, P., Lefevre, J.-M., Aouf, L., Collard, F., 2010. Semi-empirical dissipation source functions for wind-wave models: Part I. Definition, calibration and validation. J. Phys. Oceanogr. 40 (9), 1917-1941]. Results from this hindcast include traditional wave parameters, like the significant wave height and mean periods, and we particularly consider the accuracy of the results for phenomenal sea states, with significant heights above 14 m. Using unbiased winds, there is no evidence...

A Governing Framework for Climate Change Adaptation in the Built Environment Ecology and Society
Mazmanian, Daniel A.; University of Southern California; mazmania@price.usc.edu; Jurewitz, John; Pomona College; john.jurewitz@gmail.com; Nelson, Hal T.; Claremont Graduate University; hal.nelson@cgu.edu.
Developing an approach to governing adaptation to climate change is severely hampered by the dictatorship of the present when the needs of future generations are inadequately represented in current policy making. We posit this problem as a function of the attributes of adaptation policy making, including deep uncertainty and nonstationarity, where past observations are not reliable predictors of future outcomes. Our research links organizational decision-making attributes with adaptation decision making and identifies cases in which adaptation actions cause spillovers, free riding, and distributional impacts. We develop a governing framework for adaptation that we believe will enable policy, planning, and major long-term development decisions to be made...

A herbal feed additive shows potential to improve metabolic situation in early lactating dairy cows Organic Eprints
Walkenhorst, M.; Ivemeyer, S.; Schaette, R.; Mayer, P.; Arndt, G..
The gap between performance and feed intake in early lactating dairy cows often leads to metabolic imbalance which is connected to udder inflammation (UI). A study with 72 dairy cows calving from November 2010 to March 2011 on 10 Swiss and German farms was conducted to test the effect of a herbal feed additive (HFA) containing mainly Urtica dioica L. (herba), Silybum marianum (L.) Gaert. (fructus), Artemisia absinthium L. (herba) and Achillea millefolium L. (herba). Cows were stratified (farm and milk yield) randomised divided into three groups. From 14 days prior predicted calving to the end of the following lactation cows received daily 100 g pellets containing A: 100% HFA, B: 50% HFA and 50% alfalfa and C: 100% alfalfa (placebo). Two or three cows per...

A hierarchical Bayesian model for embedding larval drift and habitat models in integrated life cycles for exploited fish ArchiMer
Rochette, Sebastien; Le Pape, Olivier; Vigneau, Joel; Rivot, Etienne.
This paper proposes a hierarchical Bayesian framework for modeling the life cycle of marine exploited fish with a spatial perspective. The application was developed for a nursery-dependent fish species, the common sole (Solea solea), on the Eastern Channel population (Western Europe). The approach combined processes of different natures and various sources of observations within an integrated framework for life-cycle modeling: (1) outputs of an individual-based model for larval drift and survival that provided yearly estimates of the dispersion and mortality of eggs and larvae, from spawning grounds to settlement in several coastal nurseries; (2) a habitat suitability model, based on juvenile trawl surveys coupled with a geographic information system, to...

A hierarquia social e o regime de oferta influenciam o consumo de água em bovinos leiteiros. Organic Eprints
Hotzel, Maria José; Teixeira, Dayane Lemos; Machado Filho, Luiz Carlos Pinheiro.

A high load of non-neutral amino-acid polymorphisms explains high protein diversity despite moderate effective population size in a marine bivalve with sweepstakes reproduction ArchiMer
Harrang, Estelle; Lapegue, Sylvie; Morga, Benjamin; Bierne, Nicolas.
Marine bivalves show among the greatest allozyme diversity ever reported in Eukaryotes, putting them historically at the heart of the neutralist-selectionist controversy on the maintenance of genetic variation. Although it is now acknowledged that this high diversity is most probably a simple consequence of a large population size, convincing support for this explanation would require a rigorous assessment of the silent nucleotide diversity in natural populations of marine bivalves, which has not yet been done. This study investigated DNA sequence polymorphism in a set of 37 nuclear loci in wild samples of the flat oyster Ostrea edulis. Silent diversity was found to be only moderate (0.7%), and there was no departure from demographic equilibrium under the...

A high-resolution modeling study of the Western Iberian Margin mean and seasonal upper ocean circulation ArchiMer
Nolasco, Rita; Pires, Ana; Cordeiro, Nuno; Le Cann, Bernard; Dubert, Jesus.
The mean seasonal hydrography and circulation of the Western Iberian Margin (WIM) are studied by means of a high-resolution configuration of the Regional Oceanic Modeling System. A comparison of 5-year model averages for January and July with climatological datasets shows a general good agreement in the reproduction of the mean water mass properties and hydrographic distribution. We find that there is a prevailing tendency for slope poleward flow at about 80-100 km offshore at all latitudes from the surface to 1,500 m with strong vertical coupling. This northward flow, which is mainly along slope and amounts up to 8-10 cm s(-1), exhibits several mean flow recirculation regions on its way and evidences of an offshore pathway of poleward flow. Transports at...

A Histological Assessment of the Cell Death Induced by Haloperidol on Prefrontal Cortex International Journal of Morphology
Ghanbari,Ali; Kakebaraei,Seyran; Khazaei,Mozafar.
Neuroleptic drugs such as haloperidol has side effects on extrapyramidal pathways. Tardive Dyskinesia is the most important complication. The most characteristic feature of this Tardive Dyskinesia is involuntary movements of mouth and face. In regard to this problem, the induction of gliosis and cell death in the nervous tissue are considered. In this study, adult Sprague-Dawley rats were used as experimental models. Rats were divided into control and experimental groups. The rats were kept in the animal house under standard conditions during experiments. The control rats were intraperitoneally treated with normal saline for 6 days. The experimental samples were treated for the same time with 2, 5 and 10 mg haloperidol. After the trial period, the rats...
